Unpaid Leave
Also known as: leave without pay, LWOP
Unpaid leave is approved time off during which the employee receives no pay but keeps their job and (usually) their benefits.
Unpaid leave (leave without pay) is authorised time off for which the employee is not paid. It's used when someone has exhausted their paid allowance, needs extended personal time, or for specific categories such as parental or study leave that a policy defines as unpaid.
The employment relationship continues during unpaid leave, so the role is protected, but pay stops and the impact on benefits and accrual should be spelled out in the policy.
