Probation Period

Also known as: probationary period

A probation period is the initial phase of employment during which leave may be limited and either party can end the contract with shorter notice.

A probation period is the trial phase at the start of a job — commonly three to six months — during which the employer assesses the new hire. Some leave policies limit or defer leave accrual and taking during probation, or require extra approval.

While leave during probation is often still legally accruing, employers may ask that little or none is taken until the period is passed. The rules should be stated clearly so expectations are set on day one.
