Garden Leave
Also known as: gardening leave
Garden leave is a paid period during a notice period when an employee stays away from work but remains employed and under contract.
Garden leave (or gardening leave) describes a situation where an employee who has resigned or been given notice is asked to stay away from the workplace during their notice period while still being paid. They remain employed, bound by their contract, and unable to start a new job until the notice ends.
Employers use garden leave to keep departing staff — especially those with access to sensitive information or clients — away from competitors and current projects while the notice period runs down.
